IPL skin rejuvenation aftercare

To support your recovery and help avoid any adverse reactions, it is important to follow your aftercare instructions carefully.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses targeted light energy to treat pigmentation, redness, and vascular concerns in the skin. Following your treatment, your skin will be in a temporarily sensitive state. The instructions below will help you care for it properly while it heals.

What to expect after your treatment

It is normal to experience the following immediately after your IPL treatment:

  • Redness and mild warmth to the treated area, similar to a sunburned feeling. This typically settles within 2–3 hours but may last up to 2–3 days

  • Mild swelling, particularly under the eyes. Apply a clean cool compress and take an antihistamine as directed on the label if needed. This usually resolves within 48 hours

  • A pleasantly warm sensation to the skin. This is a normal response to the light energy and settles quickly

Your clinician will apply a soothing post-treatment emulsion and SPF to the treated area before you leave the clinic.

If pigmentation was treated: The targeted pigmentation will appear darker immediately after treatment and over the first few days. This is completely normal — the darkened pigment will gradually flake off and self-dissolve over 7–10 days. Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the area during this time.

If vascular concerns were treated: Targeted vessels may appear darker or bruised for up to 48 hours, then begin to fade over the following 7 days.

If general redness was treated: Mild superficial swelling or hives may be present for up to 48 hours. Take antihistamine as directed on the label if needed.

For the 24 hours following your appointment:

  • Remain indoors in a clean, cool environment where possible

  • Avoid hot showers; wash the treated area gently with cool to lukewarm water

  • Avoid spas, saunas, and steam rooms

  • Avoid strenuous exercise

  • Stay well hydrated

  • Makeup can be applied if the skin is not irritated — apply gently with a clean brush or sponge.

For 48 hours following your appointment:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise

  • Continue to avoid spas, saunas, and heat exposure

For the duration of your treatment course:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days or indoors

  • Avoid direct sun exposure where possible as it increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

  • Avoid picking, scratching, or exfoliating the treated area

  • Avoid acids, exfoliants, and any harsh or abrasive skincare products until the skin has fully settled

  • Your clinician will advise when you can resume your regular skincare routine and any active ingredients.

Your treatment plan

IPL treatments are generally recommended as a course of sessions, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. Your clinician will advise on the number of sessions appropriate for your skin and concerns at your consultation.
