HaySpray aftercare
To support your recovery and help avoid any adverse reactions, it is important to follow your aftercare instructions carefully.
Your HaySpray treatment today used a botulinum toxin medicine delivered directly into the nasal passages to reduce the nerve activity responsible for allergy symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, and runny nose. If you have any questions about your treatment, please speak with your treating Registered Nurse or Doctor.
You may notice some mild nasal irritation or sneezing immediately after your treatment — this is normal and settles quickly.
For the 4 hours following your appointment:
Do not blow your nose
Try to avoid sneezing forcefully where possible
Remain in an upright position.
For the 24 hours following your appointment:
Do not use any nasal sprays - this includes saline, corticosteroid, and antihistamine nasal sprays
Avoid strenuous exercise
Avoid swimming or submerging your face in water
Avoid dusty, smoky, or high-pollen environments where possible.
For the 2 weeks following your appointment:
You may continue taking your regular oral anti-allergy medications (such as antihistamines) as the treatment takes effect
Take note of your allergy symptoms over the next 2 to 4 weeks as this will help your Registered Nurse or Doctor to assess your response at your follow-up appointment
Avoid any nasal procedures or treatments unless approved by your Registered Nurse or Doctor.
What to expect
Onset is typically within 1–2 weeks as the botulinum toxin takes effect in the nasal passages. Most patients notice a gradual reduction in sneezing, congestion, and nasal irritation over this period.
Results generally last 3–4 months, after which a repeat treatment can be discussed with your treating clinician. Individual results will vary depending on the severity of your symptoms, the time of year, and your personal response to the treatment.
Adverse reactions
HaySpray is generally very well tolerated. However, please contact us promptly if you experience any of the following:
Nosebleed that does not resolve within 10–15 minutes
Significant or prolonged nasal pain or irritation
Headache that does not respond to paracetamol
Difficulty swallowing or eating
Double, blurred or altered vision
Any unusual facial weakness or asymmetry
If you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek urgent medical attention immediately and contact us as soon as you are able.
