Microdermabrsaion FAQs

Microdermabrasion treatment in a beautiful Annerley clinic in Brisbane

  • Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation that works on the outer layers of your skin to remove dirt, debris and dead skin cells while also stimulating the growth of new skin cells and the production of collagen and elastin.

  • If you haven’t already had a thorough Skin Consultation your Dermal Therapist will first conduct an express consultation to assess your skin, discuss your skin concerns, goals and current home care. This will ensure your microdermabrasion treatment can be tailored to your unique skin.

Then the treatment begins! We have three microdermabrasion treatments available at Derm Haus Brisbane and they are tailored to your requirements. The below description is for the Microdermabrasion Ultimate Skin Revision treatment.

First we deep cleanse your skin with your appropriate DMK cleanser, then continue with microdermabrasion lymphatic drainage - a light smooth draining pattern to reduce puffiness and increase circulation. Next is a microdermabrasion exfoliation using an abrasive tip suitable for your skin. Your Dermal Therapist will run the tip over your skin in short, firm strokes working from the forehead to your décolletage. You won’t feel any pain but it can be slightly uncomfortable if your skin is sensitive. We treat the full face, neck and décolletage.

We will then apply a DMK hydrating treatment mask and wrap in a hot towel to rehydrate the skin. Then we follow with our signature express phototherapy to energise cells and stimulate the skin’s natural rejuvenation and repair process. Lastly we deliver a customised vitamin infusion and a calming moisturiser.

  • There is generally no down for microdermabrasion. You may feel slightly warm and experience slight redness which should subside within 6 hours. However, if you’re using microdermabrasion to aid in recovery and enhance results of other treatments it can intensify the downtime of the other treatment in some instances. Your Dermal Therapist will discuss possible downtime when pairing microdermabrasion with other treatments.

  • Yes! Drink lots of water. We’ve given your blood and lymphatic circulation a good kick start and we want to clear out all the debris between those cells. So keeping the new skin hydrated by following the homecare your Dermal Therapist has given you is important. This not only helps you reach your skin goals but provides a decreased risk of chemical reaction.

Be sure to avoid AHA’s, BHA’s and Retinols within 6 hours after your microdermabrasion treatment and wear SPF (always)!

  • No, it should not hurt. If you are particularly sensitive it may feel uncomfortable. If you bruise easily or are taking blood thinners please advise your therapist as this can increase your chances of suction bruising and grazing.

  • It can be used right before most treatments however as a general skin maintenance Microdermabrasion can be carried out every 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Yes! Microdermabrasion is beneficial following PRP therapy, cosmetic injectables, skin needling, and enzyme therapy to aid recovery and optimise results. We have designed a special ‘Microdermabrasion Add-On’ treatment for this reason.

    We recommend microdermabrasion:

    • 2 weeks after Anti Wrinkle injections

    • 4 weeks after Dermal Filler treatment

    • 2 weeks after PRP Therapy

    • Same day as Enzyme Therapy or 1 week after

    • Same day as LED

  • We generally don’t recommend at-home microdermabrasion for a few reasons:

    • Many of the at-home microdermabrasion kits are essentially just facial scrubs with low-quality active ingredients that provide mild exfoliation. Often, you are better off spending your money on quality exfoliation skincare products.

    • You could be at risk of damaging your skin if your device is not used correctly which can lead to irreversible vessel damage.

    • Professional clinical machines are more powerful than at-home devices due to the engineering and power of the motor, variable and powerful suction pressures, and variations in gradient tips to suit different skin conditions.

    • Microdermabrasion machines are operated by staff who are highly trained in the anatomy of the skin to safely deliver an effective treatment.

    • In-clinic microdermabrasion is more efficient and safe, and your therapist will use it in conjunction with other treatments to best address your goals. At Derm Haus Brisbane, we use a commercial grade diamond microdermabrasion machine with various gradients of abrasion and suction pressure. Your Dermal Therapist can adjust your microdermabrasion treatment to suit your skin types and skin condition.

If you’re looking for treatments that you can do at home, our Dermal Therapist can provide you with recommendations of quality skincare products that you are actually going to see results from and that won’t damage your skin.

  • Yes! For a microdermabrasion treatment when pregnant or breastfeeding, we just adjust the pressures as you are generally more vascular and prone to sensitivity. We will also adjust which ingredients in products we use to ensure your treatment is safe for you and your baby.

  • Microdermabrasion is suitable for everyone other than those who suffer from vascular disorders or have broken or highly inflamed skin.

If you are unsure if microdermabrasion is suitable for you, the best thing to do is book a Skin Consultation with our Dermal Therapist.

  • Microdermabrasion is a very safe treatment, however with all treatments there are some possible side effects that you need to be aware of:

    • Slight redness

    • Sensitivity

    • Some stinging may be felt when applying products at home

    • Some stinging when sweating within 6 hours after treatment

    • Suction bruising- this usually subsides within 7 days

    • Superficial grazing- this clears usually within 7 days post treatment.
