PRP aftercare

To support your recovery and help avoid any adverse reactions, it is important to follow your aftercare instructions carefully.

The Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) that has been injected into your skin is a natural substance extracted from your blood. Because of this, it is fragile and needs to be treated carefully to allow it to complete its regenerative work, particularly in the first 48 hours.

Immediately after the procedure, the injection area will feel tighter and lines and wrinkles will appear minimised. This degree of skin tightening will not last and over the next 4 days your skin will return to normal, however, under the skin the PRP treatment has begun to support cell renewal and improve the subsurface layers of the skin.

First 12 hours

  • Do not wash your face with cleansers or apply liquid makeup. If you need to wash your face, please do so only after 4 hours and use warm water without soap

  • If progressive swelling occurs after you leave the clinic, apply ice wrapped in a clean cloth to the area for 5–10 minutes, up to 3 times a day

  • Sleep with an extra pillow for the first night to help reduce under-eye swelling.

First 24–48 hours

  • Avoid exercise that would usually create a flushed face or excessive facial perspiration

  • Minimise alcohol, caffeine and supplements that may increase bruising

  • For patients who regularly take aspirin, resume 48 hours post-procedure unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

First 7 days

  • If you require pain relief, use paracetamol

  • Do not use any anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen

  • Avoid oral steroids such as prednisone — do not stop or adjust any prescription medication without speaking with your prescribing doctor first.

Swelling

In some cases patients can have a significant swelling response in the under-eye area. This is due to the body initiating an amplified regenerative process and will usually be evident at the time of the procedure. Your treating clinician will assess any swelling and, if necessary, apply ice for a short period to calm down the local response and minimise post-procedure downtime.

Refer to the guidance under First 12 hours for further advice to manage swelling at home.

Infections

Infections caused by PRP are extremely rare, however, if you experience progressive swelling, redness, heat, oozing, or changes to the treatment site 24 hours after your procedure please contact Derm Haus or speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

Soreness

PRP Skin Rejuvenation Therapy releases growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen in the skin and support the body's normal healing response. As a result, the application site may feel as if it has been injured, potentially feeling sore, tender to touch, and warm. These symptoms can last up to 4 days and then should ease.

Your treatment plan

PRP Therapy is designed to be used as part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation program supervised by your clinician.

Some patients notice improvements in overall skin appearance around 4 weeks after treatment, however it can take up to 12 weeks for the full effects to become apparent.

As a general guide, we typically recommend a course of 3 to 4 sessions with 4-week intervals, followed by a maintenance treatment every 9 to 12 months. Your clinician will discuss the recommended treatment plan for your specific needs at your consultation.

Supporting your results with a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and minimal alcohol and caffeine will also help your skin recover well between sessions. Individual results will vary depending on age, general health, and skin condition.
